Fishing this week was extra tough due to all the new fishermen that read the article
in the Sunday journal. To make things more crowded two more papers also had articles
on how hot Pewaukee Lake has been. I was informed of a 50 plus inch muskie that was
spotted floating on the west end of Pewaukee Lake. This fish was foul hooked by a
fishermen and placed into the bottom of the boat to be worked on. After that it was
placed back into the water.
The article about this fish was published in a local paper and claimed after a long period of time the fish was released, a "good release" as it said. If you take a fish especially a large fish out of the water for more than a few minuits time that can't be considered a good release. A good release is when you catch a fish then remove the hooks while its still in the water then and only then should you take a fish out of the water for a picture. In the article it was mentioned about all the slime that was everywhere. This is the pertective slime that the fish needs and that must not be removed. Keeping the fish in the water helps protect the fish from injury. If pictures are to be taken get your tape, camera and everything layed out so when the fish is taken out of the water you can take care of buisness quickly and get your trophy back without any excess stress to the fish. With that off my chest back to the fishing report. The muskies are moving back to the weed lines. Trolling is still the hottest pattern working but the casters are starting to see and catch fish now. My advice is to cast early and late in the day and troll the other hours. This will give you some uncrowded water to work. It won't be long before the weed line bite is back. Remember the early bird catches the worm first. Looking back on this last week I noticed that a 42 incher was the only fish I boated. The fish was between Rocky Point and Lakeside, she hit a Bagleys DB03mag in 17 ft of water at 9:55 pm. Catching fish after dark is one of the most exciting ways to catch muskies, you feel everything they do so much better in the dark. I only fished Thursday and Friday nights. Thursday I had two hits, one on the North shore and the other a big fish that I never got to the boat was on the South shore off Beach Park. Friday I boated the 42 incher. Things are getting way to buisy at work and the overtime is getting old. I talked to one of my pals at work and he had good sucess on the west end weed line from the condo's all the way around to Walks Island. Spinnerbaits moved the most fish and two of the fish were in the low 40's. When the 40 inch class fish start moving back into the weed lines its time to start casting again. Days are getting shorter and fishing is only going to get better. I will be getting out more this week starting Tuesday night. Saturday I have clients and I am fishing a MuskieFirst match challenge the rest of the day. The muskies are getting active! I got out Thursday around 7:30 for some trolling and
caught a 36 inch muskie on the first pass down the north shore. The fish are starting
to move from suspending in the deep water to the breaks and weed lines. I noticed more
casters working the weed lines this week and some working the same spots more than once,
you know what that tells me. Still trolling is the high percentage method until the
water cools off some.
The water temps are from 74 to 78 and falling slowly. Well back to Thursday, the second fish came from just off Walks Island around 9:15 pm. This fish was 40 1/2 inches and crunched a Bagleys DB04 that was running in 23 foot of water. The third fish came shortly after that, she hit the same bait in about the same depth of water just west of Beach Park. This was my first three fish night this year, the last two fish came after dark and the lake was almost empty of boat traffic. What a excellent time to be out and taking advantage of the muskies without the headaches of all the other people on the lake. Friday I put the boat in at 7:45 and tried the same thing, this time Mark Sankey was the man. We started on the north shore and headed west, we got to the condo's and started to make our way across the "horeshoe" and his drag started to screem. After a good battle I netted a nice 38 incher for him. We snapped a few pics and put her back. I wish that I could have gotten out Saterday or Sunday but this was a time saved for my family. Get out there and take advantage of some of better muskie fishing that Pewaukee Lake has to offer. Remember with the full moon phase comming this week I think some one will score a big fish. Last week I know of a 47 incher that was caught and released. I will be out Tuesday to try try my luck again, see you on the water!!! |

The fish are starting to move back to the weed lines but this will take some lower
water temps to get them back in numbers. Trolling is still the high percentage way to
put fish in your boat. I tried some short line trolling and hooked up with a 34.75
inch musky just after sunrise on Saturday morning. This fish was located off the weed
line northwest of Rocky point. After a few days of east winds the fish seem to stack
up around the narrows mostly around Rocky Point. When the wind changes back to west
is when I try to work that area.
I talked to a few people that caught fish casting last week. The fish were caught off weedlines that were located close to deep water. Crank baits were the lures of choice. I like the Bagleys, Slammer Deep Divers, and Baby Depth Raiders for this type of fishing. Crank down the weed edges and be shure to add some type of triggering pull or twitch once the bait gets down in the zone you want to work to get that reaction strike you are looking for. With the muskies starting to move some the night bite will start to get real good. The full moon phase is not more than a week away and I will be out casting well into the night next week. The days are getting shorter and the water tempatures are starting to slowly drop, this all adds up to better fishing. If you are looking for some fast and fun fishing try the big pond. I went out Sunday morning with one of my friends and caught 15 fish and lost 6. The 4 year old Kings will be making there way into the harbor of Milwaukee soon but fishing is great now. We caught three kings that were over 20lbs and lost 2 other good ones. Lake Trout, Steelhead and Chinook made up the rest of the bag. We released the Lake Trout and some small Chinook that were ok and in good shape to let go. This is some great therapy for the musky fishermen that has been trolling for the last two months. The methods to catch these fish are to numerous to list but if you are interested check out MuskieFirst.com and click on "Fishing Reports" then click on Lake Michigan Extra Reports. If there is any questions drop me a e-mail and I would be glad to answer any of your muskie or Lake Michigan questions. You should check out MuskieFirst.com for some of the best muskie info the web has to offer. Join us and we will help you become a better muskie fishermen. The fishing on Pewaukee Lake continues to stay good. There is fish caught every day
but there is also alot of boats that will come home with only storys. The muskies are
not going crazy but are being caught by some of the trollers each night that I have
been out. I have had my share of no fish nights in the last week.
Monday night I came up empty for a client and I tried every thing that was working for me. There also is the days like Thursday when I slipped out by myself and had four fish on and boated two in three hours. The first fish came off the north shore just short of the narrows , this fish ate a Bagleys DB4 while running 22 foot of water. The other fish hit on the south shore down by the island in 20 foot of water. Most of the fish are being caught in water deeper than 19 foot. I got out four times last week and only boated two fish, 36 and a 38. But also lost a real nice fish and missed three hits. Thats muskie fishing. I will be fishing Wednesday,Thursday and maybe Sunday so hopefully with the moon phases in my favor this week, some good quality fish can be caught. Most patterns and baits have stayed the same for the last three weeks and I expect them to continue until the water starts to cool down. I personally can't wait to start casting again. See you on the water!!! |
